Our second designer in focus is Mrs. Sania Maskatiya, one of my first favorite designers. I first heard about this talented lady on a talk show. Syra Shehroz, an up and coming model and actress, wore her design on her wedding day. I absolutely fell in love with the coloring and designing of the dress. It was light coral and peach color with plenty of silver work on it. Syra wore a simple diamond set and tikka and minimal makeup. To be honest, she didn’t need anything else. So from there my love affair with Sania Maskatiya began.
Sania Maskatiya is a textile design graduate from the prestigious Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi, Pakistan. In 2010, she started her own design house and in 2012, after she designed Syra’s wedding dress, she was catapulted into the limelight.
Unlike other designers, Sania Maskatiya focuses on Luxury Pret and Bridals only. Her prices reflect that. Her price range for clothes is anywhere from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 400,000+. She works with a variety of high-quality fabrics such as silk, cotton net, crepe, velvet, and Jamawar. She specializes in textile design so much time is spent on bringing together different fabrics and prints in one piece. She also has some interesting cuts and silhouettes. Her designs, especially her pants/shalwars are meticulously designed and scream creativity and innovation. I feel like she is on the front-line of fashion trends. She introduces many new concepts and the industry follows.
When I visited her website and visited her Karachi store, I noticed I was more inclined towards her Luxury Pret outfits, then her bridals. To be blunt, her bridals are nothing exceptional. They look like any other bridal piece, with lots of color-play and embellishments. Her genius and talent lies in her less formal line, which is the Luxury Pret line. That’s why I own some of her pieces in this line and would probably opt out of bridals for my wedding.
Today, her brand is synonymous with the biggest brands and designers of the country. Accroding to her website, she is “best known for their versatile, specialized prints, textile design based on pure fabrics, unique colors, and fine craftsmanship”. Her runway shows are much anticipated in both Pakistan and international markets such as India, Europe, and the US. Their design sensibility has been celebrated and awarded with prestigious awards such as Lux Style Awards for Achievement in Luxury Pret and in Lawn. As mentioned previously, the brand continues to grow internationally as well. Sania Maskatiya was nominated for the coveted International Woolmark Prize and is one of the first Pakistani brands to have a solo show at the Lakme Fashion Week in India. Some of her clients are Sonam Kapoor, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, a two-time Oscar winner, and of course, Syra Sheroz.
Sania Maskatiya herself currently serves on the board of the Executive Committee of the Indus Valley School Of Art and Architecture.
