Astrophysics for People in a Hurry

I started this book back in June and because of my new job, hadn’t gone through with it fast enough to tell you how awesome it is. A #1 New York Times Bestseller, it deals with the same themes and topics that Stephen Hawking book,” ABrief History of Time” explained but in a more simpler, less scientific  language. You can read my book review for that book HERE. Although the language is simple, by no means this book tried to tackle a simple idea.

When I read Dr. Hawking’s book, he posed great ideas and insights about the universe and how it came about. During that read, I became obsessed with figuring out the “shape” of the universe through the theories and physical laws we already have discovered and know. I thought about questions like is there an end to time and space? Is there an end the universe? Einstein would say that end of time, means end of space and thus the universe. Thus space-time is connected and one cannot have space without time. In this book, I tried to continue that research, but was rather drawn to other topics.

For example, famous astrophysicists and Dr. Neil De Grasse Tyson posed the theory of a multiverse rather than one unified universe. I began to think deeply about it-first linguistically to understand the intention behind the word and then conceptually. The definition of universe according to Wikipedia is “all of space and time (space-time) and its contents, which includes planets, moons, minor planets, stars, galaxies, the contents of intergalactic space and all matter and energy. So in other words the universe includes matter, space-time, and energy. The Universe is everything we can touch, feel, sense, measure or detect. It includes living things, planets, stars, galaxies, dust clouds, light, and even time. Before the birth of the Universe, time, space and matter did not exist. But does the definition of the universe include only the “observable things” like planets, stars, galaxies, and cosmic rays? How can we really be sure there is something like a multiverse? Then I got into thinking.

Dr. Tyson talks about dark matter and dark energy. We cannot see it, smell it, or detect it through any current form of technology. The only way know we know it exists is the way gravitational forces act around this dark, seemingly empty space. Dark matter and dark energy doesn’t look and act likes any matter we know and no known physical laws and theories can be applied to how it works (essentially because we don’t know what it is). And I got into thinking is dark matter and dark energy another universe or dimension or is it part of “our universe” and “dimension”.

If we go back to the big bang, we know there was intense gravity and all the matter was packed into that point, but was dark matter and dark energy in that point? Is that what caused the bang to occur? What was around that point zero? Why didn’t that get attracted to this point that contained all the stuff we believe the universe matter comes from?  Was it dark matter and dark energy that surrounded the point zero? Does it have a different form of gravity or magnetic qualities because it is not matter as we know it? Is this fact why matter and dark matter didn’t collude after the Big Bang occurred. Something to think about, right?

In terms of the book recommendation, I highly recommend this book. It is packed with information and it is a truly fascinating explanation of what the best minds know about the universe TODAY. Dr. Tyson’s use of language is very exact and precise and knowing what he was popular for, it was nice to know the “rumors” are true.
